Service Description

Dissect untold stories and explore the ethical questions behind some of Cambridge’s most influential scientific discoveries on this unique walking tour. This Uncomfortable Cambridge tour traces the city’s scientific history, from splitting the atom to uncovering the structure of DNA. Along the way, your guide will encourage participants to reflect on what lies behind these breakthroughs: the unintended consequences of scientific progress; the financial and social structures that shape research; ethical grey areas; and the ways these discoveries continue to echo in science today. Explore both iconic landmarks and lesser-known sites that reveal how science is shaped by funding, experimentation, technology, personal bias, and global inequality - as well as the breakthroughs and consequences that result. Each tour is led by university researchers who are passionate about Cambridge, its residents, and its diverse past. Our well-researched and intellectually stimulating tours are designed to encourage critical thinking and discussion amongst participants. This particular tour was originally developed in collaboration with the Kavli Centre for Ethics, Science & the Public. Our tours are one of the 'things to do' in Cambridge and are a highly engaging and fun way to discover the iconic city. Tour recommended for age 12 and older.
